Article 1: Spanish, English, and Bilingual Children's Performance in Semantic Tasks

I'm going to try to post one article summary per week to keep up on evidence-based practice and to provide others with a "quick look" at articles that I think are helpful resources. It'll be written like an annotated bibliography with quotes that might be important for a particular case I'm working with at the time. Pe ñ a, E., Bedore, L.M., & Rappazzo, C. (2003). Comparison of Spanish, English, and bilingual children's performance across semantic tasks. One Word

Like many beginning of the year trainings, there are those somewhat cheesy get to know you games and quizzes to show us how to communicate better with our colleagues. We were introduced to an activity that we're supposed to think on for the next couple days till our next meeting later this week. It's based on "One Word," a talk from the inspirational speaker, Jon Gordon. Although it felt at first like ploy to get us talking to one another (which is not a problem for speech pathologists, ha!), I was particularly drawn to it because a recurring theme in the counseling and multicultural aspects of my studies has been: Know thyself. If we can distill what we're working on for the next year into one word, then perhaps we can hone our practice through knowing ourselves in order to truly know others. For example, to accept that a parent or caregiver might not be accepting of your position, you must know your biases in order to be open to theirs. To accept that perhap...

Welcome and the WHY List

Welcome to FirstYearSpeechie! This blog is about my first year as a speech-language pathologist. *Disclaimer: All posts are opinions only. They only reflect the thoughts and feelings of the author.* I started my first job TODAY at a school district after finishing my last clinical externship on Friday. I still have my comprehensive exams coming up in October, so blog posts may become less frequent around that time, but until then, I hope to post the day in and day out about everything speech-related. Posts will also include evidence-based practice, information about practicing on a student waiver (only in certain states at certain school districts), the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) national convention coming up in November, Aha! and Oh Sh$%! moments, and everything in between. I'm happy to also take requests for posts such as grad school questions, clinic questions, how to earn money while in school, and ways to maintain a balance between relationships, scho...
